Russian Mail Order Brides

It’s interesting that in the age of political correctness and particular detail to linguistic diplomacy men insist on searching for “Russian mail-order brides” online. I myself being one of those women, who were once looking for a partner on the Web, find this term disturbingly offensive. It seems to me that some of these guys think that Russia is like a pizza place somewhere in Brooklyn, and Russian women are the hot calzone ready to be delivered to their door.

Well, let me tell you this. Russia, whether some like it or not, is very far from resembling Brooklyn on many-many levels. This country does produce amazing women and many of them do relocate to foreign countries, but it’s not a national export industry and I, for one, am against branding any of these women as Russian mail-order brides. When I put my profile up on some of the dating websites, I hardly expected to be treated like one, and if I know Russian women well enough, neither do they!

So why do Russian ladies register with international dating websites?

The way I see it is some register because they’re looking for a romantic relationship or feel it’s time for them to start a family. This part is no different from reasons given by any other woman listing her profile on a dating portal. The only difference, however, is that for some reason they are unable to find all that in their own country.

You’ll hear some of them blame Russian men, or circumstances, or tough competition (after all, there’s a lot of attractive women out there). Perhaps they’ve had unfortunate marriages, or they just wonder what it’s like to be dating a foreigner. To a certain extent, all of these reasons are valid and relatable, and if you wonder about them, just ask! A certain percentage is indeed looking for an affluent foreign man who would help them live their dreams, but you would be able to tell these women from the rest and steer clear of them, unless, of course, they are exactly what you’re looking for!

I guess what I’m trying to say is that a woman remains one regardless of her location, and what so-called “Russian mail-order brides” are looking for in a serious relationship is what any woman wants: respect, security and trust – things that can’t start with and be based upon prejudice.
